After troubleshooting this problem independently, I stumbled on a fix that's worked several times in a row when launching the game.
After first getting the messaging saying you can't connect to the server, hit Ctrl+Shift+Esc in Windows 7 which will bring up task manager. Go to processes and look for a process called javaw.exe. Right click this and go to Set Priority then set it to high. With the game still running hit Retry.
If you do this it should allow the game to launch but keep in mind that you will have to do it each time you start the game. Maybe this will help the techs pinpoint the exact problem we've been having but until then this should allow the client to load. After having sporadic luck for days this has allowed me to start the game 5 times in a row. When I don't, I immediately have the problem again.
Keep in mind that when you close the program, the process also closes. So you'll need to do this each time you start the game.
