I had a idea that may improve the game play a lot and make the repair target very usefull.
Repair Target -> Spore Gas
The idea is to make repair targets from antares up do damage on enemies (mantis). It should do around 50% less effectiveness then it's repair capabilities. This way engineers will be able to PvP very well and play more solo.
Story:
We all know that engineers are not very good in DPS or anything that has to do with damage. It's truth power lays in being a support ship. But I think it would be much more fair if the Engineer had some kind of DPS weapon. This way it can play solo etc. In the end of the vega system you have spore gas that is capable of infiltrating into mantis ships and make it target other mantis ships.
Now what if Spore Gas had a positive effect on metal ships (player, imperial and meth ships)... This would both change the difficulty of Behemoth Battle once again, so it can be a little bit more difficult again since you are now repaired auto.
Another addition that might change the whole gameplay, what if we add/replace the repair target stuff with spore gas. The story behind this would be that you bring a final tank of spore gas to the lab of carl sagan, there they add it to all the upcoming repair targets.
So what this does, it gives spore gas to the repair target, but because I assume it's hard to program the effect of spore gas to all enemies, just make it do damage on a mantis. Now the repair targets from Antares on do damage on mantis. It won't change anything in vega, the vega engineer is overpowered, very strong. In Antares the engineer is the weakest, now with this, the engineer makes a come back.
You may think the engineer gets overpowered, actually not. It gives it a possibility to solo enemies much easier and be a solo ship instead of a team ship. What will it change in groups? Nothing. Repair Target on friends would still be much better, and its a choice to use what you want to do, be super strong repair ship or do a little bit more damage.
