Lag is an Issue a lot of pilots complain about. I have written this post as a way for everyone to get a little more performance from their system, hopefully eliminating some if not most of the lag issues
Setting Page (Swap) File Size – The system Page (swap) File is an area on your Hard Drive that Windows sets aside for Virtual Memory Paging. The more data you are trying to process, the more you will use up the available system Memory (Ram), therefore the system will put some of that data into a Virtual space. Windows by default will not allocate (set aside) enough Disk Space for this Data so it needs to be reset. The General Rule of thumb is to set your Page File size to 1.5 times the amount of Memory (Ram) in your system with a maximum size of 4095.
It is easy to change your Page File Settings in Windows. In XP, if you have a My Computer Icon on your Desktop, Right click it & go to Properties. If you do not have a My Computer Icon, click Start then Right click My Computer. You will see 7 Tabs on your Properties Page. Click the Advanced Tab. Here you will see 3 Boxes – Performance, User Profiles & Startup & Recovery (DO NOT fool with User Profiles or Startup & Recovery). Under Performance click Settings. This opens up the Performance Window with 3 Tabs & 4 Radio Buttons. Click the button Adjust for best Performance. This will / should uncheck all the Boxes in the Big White Window. Click on the Advanced Tab. Click the Change Button under Virtual Memory.. Click the Custom Size radio button then select the Drive you want your page file on (Generally the fastest or the largest drive or C
Enter the Initial Size in the white box depending on system ram, Example: 1Gb (1024 Mb) system memory (Ram) = 1.5Gb (1536 Mb). Enter the Maximum Size (4095). Click the Set Button. Click OK. Click Apply then OK. Click OK 1 more time. Shut Down & Restart your system for the changes to take effect.
NOTE: Windows Vista & Windows 7 are slightly different than XP when it comes to changing your Page File Size. I will be writing those up & posting them soon
