Fix for Lag/Graphic Issues

Lag is an Issue a lot of pilots complain about. I have written this post as a way for everyone to get a little more performance from their system, hopefully eliminating some if not most of the lag issues

Setting Page (Swap) File Size – The system Page (swap) File is an area on your Hard Drive that Windows sets aside for Virtual Memory Paging. The more data you are trying to process, the more you will use up the available system Memory (Ram), therefore the system will put some of that data into a Virtual space. Windows by default will not allocate (set aside) enough Disk Space for this Data so it needs to be reset. The General Rule of thumb is to set your Page File size to 1.5 times the amount of Memory (Ram) in your system with a maximum size of 4095.

It is easy to change your Page File Settings in Windows. In XP, if you have a My Computer Icon on your Desktop, Right click it & go to Properties. If you do not have a My Computer Icon, click Start then Right click My Computer. You will see 7 Tabs on your Properties Page. Click the Advanced Tab. Here you will see 3 Boxes – Performance, User Profiles & Startup & Recovery (DO NOT fool with User Profiles or Startup & Recovery). Under Performance click Settings. This opens up the Performance Window with 3 Tabs & 4 Radio Buttons. Click the button Adjust for best Performance. This will / should uncheck all the Boxes in the Big White Window. Click on the Advanced Tab. Click the Change Button under Virtual Memory.. Click the Custom Size radio button then select the Drive you want your page file on (Generally the fastest or the largest drive or C:) Enter the Initial Size in the white box depending on system ram, Example: 1Gb (1024 Mb) system memory (Ram) = 1.5Gb (1536 Mb). Enter the Maximum Size (4095). Click the Set Button. Click OK. Click Apply then OK. Click OK 1 more time. Shut Down & Restart your system for the changes to take effect.

NOTE: Windows Vista & Windows 7 are slightly different than XP when it comes to changing your Page File Size. I will be writing those up & posting them soon

DISCLAIMER: This is for informational Purposes Only. If you do not feel comfortable making system changes, then DO NOT make them. This post is made by a Pirate Galaxy Pilot such as yourselves

Nice and helpful ^^

However, I do not have use for it. My PG runs like a pilot oiled with olive oil and filled with Neptune's Blliss Sliding down a very large ramp, and THAT is fast.

hi guys,

Windows vista changes swap files automatically. You could configure the size of this swap files (example 2 gigs). In my case when you have enough RAM say 4 gigs you wont notice the exchangerate of the swapfile.
My advice is if you're running Vista let the system manage your swapfile.
One word of advice: if you're finished of starting to play PG defragment and cleanup your system. That includes cleaning your swap- and temp files. A clean system increases the way Vista handles your data.

Good hunting

True, but the average playing defrags his system once or twice a week.

At least, i do so pg keeps running smoothly besides the usual lagging problems.

I have a question. For the maximum and initial sizes of virtual memory, I have 3.5 GB of RAM, should I set the initial to 5.25GB? (1.5x 3.5) and what should I set the max to? thx

If you have 3.5Gb of Ram, then your Minimum would be set at 5376 MB (5.25 Gb) & you may see if your sytem will allow 16128 MB (15.75Gb) Maximum. If it will not accept that amount use the Highest Maximum (usually @ 2.5x - 3x amount of Minimum) the system will accept (Depends on HD Size & Free Space) Be careful not to Use all your Free Space

At this time the paging file size for my drive is as follows:
Minimum allowed - 2mb
Recommended- 1725mb
Currently allocated- 1150mb

Could someone please tell me what I need to put in the "Maximum size mb" box?
And As for the "Initial size mb" ...is 1150 correct?

Im not lazy, I just hate math.

Remember if you are using an Solid state drive do not defrag it as it will make it perform worse.

Your Page File size depends on the amount of Memory (Ram) in your system as well as your Hard Drive Size. the Minimum is set to your amount of Ram x 1.5 & your Maximum is usually 2.5~3 X the amount of your Minimum (Most 32 bit systems only allow a Maximum of 4095). So if you have 2048 Mb Ram (2Gb) then your minimum size would be 3072 & your Maximum (If System allows it) will be 7680~9216. If system does not allow that set Maximum to 4095. If you have more than 1 Hard Drive in your sytem, always use the fastest Drive or the one with the most Free Space
