A thought ran through my head, and instead of just having custom colors with all the patterns, have the colors and patterns, with ship pieces that you can mix and match to make a unique ship to your desire, and different parts would be given to different ships with styles matching the vessel you fly. (no augment to abilities or status of course)
to make it more fun, have the parts as blueprints that you need to find so you can get the different bits from all over.
