Why do the ships fly so low?

I'm only on my 2nd planet so maybe this changes, but it seems like the ships are barely flying above the ground, and they cant even fly over lava. If a ship can fly in space why does it fly so low to the ground on planets?

That s how the game is designed, and as Heriiwax said, it s same on all planets.

But this could also be an answer ^^
