I just noticed today when visiting the PG website that the game no longer complained and gave me the "Windows only!" error message. Of course, the client doesn't exactly START either but rather gets stuck in the first loading screen, so I'm guessing it's probably just an oversight... still, makes you wonder.

It always did strike me as odd, to create a game running in a browser, on java (which both provide platform independence really), and then tie the game down to Microsoft systems and throw away the main advantages of both Java and browser games.

I don't suppose anyone is actually working on getting the game to work in a platform independent fashion?

The game only runs on a Intel processor so far I know so if you have a mac but whit a Motorola one you can't play the game... but you can always sent in a ticket and see what you get as answer from them

Well, yes, I'm on a Macintosh. Intel based of course, as all macs have been for a very long time. Every mac that's been produced in the past few years is basically running plain PC hardware, on a UNIX based system (NextStep UNIX is the foundation of OSX).

I suppose technically I might get the game working through an emulator like WINE, but quite frankly it's not worth the hassle; PG is fun, but not THAT fun. Technically, I could also dual boot the computer and install Windows on my Mac - but I didn't buy a mac to pay tribute to Microsoft and use windows. Getting away from Microsoft and Windows is the reason I bought a mac in the first place.

I'm just curious about whether anyone is working on getting PG running OS independent. Java runs on mac, linux and windows alike. The browsers are the same as well (Yay, firefox.) I think the only thing that tied PG to windows was the odd choice to used directx instead of something more accessible, like OpenGL and whatever other platform independent systems are out there.

It's really a question of whether anyone is trying to get away from the dependency on directx, or if everyone just gave up and said "directX already tied us to windows, so let's program everything accordingly" - in which case the code may be so horribly windows specific that any plans to achieve OS independence are plain shot.

Really??

PG runs on OSX now? Odd that it doesn't work for me...

I'm running on a Mac Mini, Snowleopard 10.6.8, all systems updated. Intel Core 2 Duo 2.26GHz, 2gb DDR3 ram, NVIDIA GeForce 9400 (256mb) graphics card.

Java version is 10.6_29 - automatically distributed from Apple via the system updates. When I try to launch the game in Firefox, all I get is the little loading circle blinking merrily - but the network traffic is zero, and it simply never gets anywhere... Same thing in Safari browser.

I'd really like to get PG working now. :)

You just found & answered your Problem. Snow Leopard does support DirectX as does Lion. You do need DirectX for Graphics & Audio. DirectX is a standard that was partially developed by MS way back when
