What does leveling give us besides 50 gold?

I noticed that when I level, I get 50 gold.However, what else does leveling give? Do I get more HP or power etc? I don't see anything given except for the gold and except for the qualification for better items and ships.

That is basically it, You need the levels to be able to buy the appropriate Armour and Tech,
The 50 gold is a nice bonus though
