Can view the ship idea here: http://forum.pirategalaxy.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=8860&p=87573#p87573

Codenamed "Blackbird" after the famous SR-71 that broke both speed and altitude records over 2,000 years ago, the STAM-XE is the most advanced ship design that Sol Technologies has ever come out with. The ship's design schematics were found by Rebels during a raid on a secure Imperial research facility, shortly before the Krygar Caste fell. In the schematic were many referances to "Draconis", a previously undiscovered star system that is rumored to house the Mantis homeworld. Once the Rebels discovered Draconis, they were able to finish the design of the ship, including it's many specialised systems that require the harnessing of Zero Point energy to operate. It had many flight tests and failures, and subsequent modifications that improved on the design and increased this ship's effectiveness. Below are some of the flight test logs.

June 22, 3134

On the launch pad at a rebuilt base on the Moon, a very peculiar ship was about to lift off. It looked like a beefed up STAM-S Lightning Storm, and was indeed based on that design, but with significant differances, such as a large sensor dome on the underside, which housed the ship's extremely powerful sensor array, powerful directed-energy particle laser cannons in the place of the rocket launchers, a sensor pod deployer, and a cloaking generator just behind the bridge. It also had a much more powerful drive system than a STAM-S Storm, making it about 500-1,000 Knots faster than the Storm in a planetary atmosphere. The design prototype also had several probes attached to it's front side, for flight testing purposes, that monitor the ship's systems.

In the cockpit, the test pilot, who goes by the nickname of Flame (he likes thermoblasting things), was getting ready to take off. Once he got clearance, he lifted off and flew out to the test range set up out beyond Jupiter. The test range consisted of maneuverability tests, speed tests, weapon tests, and in the case of this ship, stealth tests. Once Flame got the ship to the test site, he initiated the maneuverability test. The ship went through the test rings with surprising ease, turning at the slightest input on the control yoke. The ship's internal computer stopped the ship from spinning out of control by initiating counter-thrusts with the ship's RCS thrusters whenever the control yoke was released. Immediately after the maneuverability tests, the speed range came up. Flame pushed the throttle to full and engaged the afterburner systems. Instantly the ship shot forward at near the speed of light, with the speed sensors on the test range registering about 5 million miles per second at full space-level thrust. Not even a Mantis Interceptor could go that fast.

After the speed test, Flame maneuvered the ship into the weapon test range, where he powered the ship's ZP Wave Distortion Blaster and it's secondary Laser Cannons. The ship's weapons ripped through the target drones with ease, and the laser cannon's explosive nature could take out multiple targets at once. A short way away, there was the stealth test range. In it were drones with live weapons, and aggressively scanning for any enemy contact. (the "live weapons" were sub-standard ion cannons.) Flame initiated the cloaking device, the lights in the cockpit flickering slightly as the cloaking field activated. The ship went smoothly through the drones, with not one detecting him. He disengaged the cloak, and headed back towards the Moon's test facility. All in all, the test went smoother than expected, and a second prototype was built shortly after the success of the first.

December 5, 3134

Third flight of the second STAM-XE prototype. Ship crashed upon liftoff, crash was attributed to improper handling of the ship's fuel cells, causing the engines to cut out before getting outside the hangar containment field. Ship was salvaged and repaired.

February 13, 3135

Second prototype explodes shortly before re-entry of Earth's atmosphere to test it's atmospheric flight properties further. All hands on board lost. Accident attributed to shoddy maintenance of the ship's thermal shielding.

July 3, 3135

First prototype passes all flight tests, revised STAM-XE design schematics distributed to all Rebel bases via subspace communications network. STAM-XE given designation STAM-X Blackbird, after the project's codename.

close enough ^^

i was using the term SR-71 as a blanket for all the variants, not just the one
